Welcome to the Wyatt Exploration trip for 2010! Our theme is "Poland Between East and West." On May 3rd, 12 UM-Flint students, 3 faculty and I are headed for Krakow, ancient capital of the kingdom of Poland (before the Crown joined with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Warsaw seemed a more logical location). We'll be in Krakow May 5 to 17. We have a great itinerary planned and I really excited and curious to see how students enjoy Poland!

More on Day 3

On our walk to Kazimierz from the Centre for European Studies in Garbarska street we met up with the Friday korowod or procession of students in Juwenalia, the May celebration of student life (all the different institutions of higher ed in Krakow---several thousand students!).  Students hold events all over the city and then parade in costume up St. Anne's street to the Market Square.  Much hilarity, singing and dancing; they are given symbolic keys to the city.  After a weekend that includes a lot of beer, the celebration ends and students take their final exams.  Not such a bad plan  . . .

In the evening after our day with Prof. Gawron we stopped in at  Wedel's on the Rynek.  Wedel's is a chocolateria, or in Polish, a chocolate drinking room: pijalnia czekolady.  What a concept!  The decor is mixed modern and fin de siecle, and in the gray overcast and rain, it is cozy and inviting.  Here's the faculty team doing their best with chocolate:
